We began production of NESCAFÉ in Indonesia at our Panjang Plant, Lampung in 1979. NESCAFÉ is one of the world's largest coffee brands, enjoyed by many of our customers around the world. Since Lampung, Indonesia is the largest coffee exporter in Indonesia, Nestlé chose this location for producing NESCAFÉ to satisfy the demands of our Indonesian customers. When selecting locally-grown coffee beans, the taste is the main criteria. Our coffee tasting experts examine samples from growers, using their refined sense of taste to choose beans of superior flavor. Our standards for selection of beans for NESCAFÉ are extremely high, a fact well known to growers, who understand we only accept the finest flavored coffee beans for our product.
In the early 90s, Panjang factory began offering Coffee Tasting training sessions to local coffee traders to instill in them the vital importance of taste in coffee production. Failure to achieve an optimum flavor is usually the result of poor post-harvest management of the coffee beans.
Later on, the Panjang factory was designated by the Nestlé Group as a center for "Pre-shipment Quality Control" for coffee beans imported from Indonesia to be used by NESCAFÉ factories all around the world.
In 1994, Nestlé Indonesia decided to work directly with farmers to grow the best quality beans, ensuring the good taste of our product by starting at the source. This initiative began with forming a dedicated team: the AgriService Department. Next, our coffee bean management experts showed coffee farmers in Ngarip the best techniques for harvesting and post-harvest management. So many farmers eagerly adopted these methods that amounts of crops per acre soon doubled. Good post-harvest management of coffee beans produced a greatly improved "cup taste" profile. Groups of farmers attended training sessions on evaluating the quality of their products and enjoyed the profits of bringing high-quality coffee to the marketplace.
Currently, our Panjang factory receives more than 80% of its coffee beans directly from farmers' groups. Since we thoroughly understand the whole process of coffee bean growing in Lampung, our Department of AgriService will continue to provide guidance and support for coffee farmers in Lampung.

Since 2000, Nestlé has worked with the Indonesian government through the Coffee and Cocoa Research Center (Puslitkoka) in Jember, using Genetic Mapping technology for finding superior coffee seedlings to achieve sustainable coffee production in Indonesia. Nestlé also supports Somatic embryogenesis technology to help plants grow faster and produced seeds with the same characteristics as parent plants. In 2008, the Agriculture Minister inaugurated the first Center for Somatic Embryogenesis of cocoa in Indonesia, the result of cooperation in technology transfer from the Nestlé R & D Centre in Tours, France. At Puslitkoka, Somatic Embryogenesis technology is used to speed the revitalization of Indonesian cocoa production.
